During the campaign season, what impact does television coverage have on political particpation? How likely are people to vote because of something they see on television? Professor Klaus Schnbach (Department of Communication Science, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands) discussed his research, which examined the influence the media and other forms of communication had on voters in the 1999 European elections. He revealed his significant conclusions about the most effective ways to increase political particpation among the general public.

Television Comes To London was first shown on the opening night of the BBC Television Service, 2nd November 1936. It was shot by Bill Barbrook, the film assistant’, and showed activity behind the scenes in the year running up to the launch – including footage of the mast being erected on the south east tower at Alexandra Palace. It was edited down to 15 minutes, set to an excerpt from Dvorak’s New World Symphony, and transmitted through a telecine machine.
